Ramadan Prep: Embracing the Sacred Journey

As the holiest month of the year approaches, my excitement is soaring to new heights. Whether you’re embarking on your first Ramadan as a newly practicing Muslim or have been a lifelong worshiper, this month promises a transformative cleanse for all. Each passing year brings us closer to Allah (SWT) and strengthens the bonds within our community. This year, I’m diving deep into preparations with a renewed sense of devotion, emphasizing simplicity and embracing the journey towards becoming the best version of oneself.

Mindset Reset:
Prepare your mind to reject bad habits, making the transition smoother:

  1. Eliminate cursing or swearing.
  2. Replace music with Quranic recitations or Islamic podcasts.
  3. Gradually reduce junk food intake.
  4. Curate your social media content to align with Islamic standards or embark on a detox.
  5. Refrain from gossiping and assuming others’ intentions, practicing forgiveness and extending grace.
  6. Uphold kindness and avoid mistreating others.

Social Preparation:
Elevate the spirit of Ramadan with thoughtful decor, food preparation, and scheduled gatherings:

  1. Support small Muslim businesses by shopping locally for Ramadan decor.
  2. Plan communal meals with friends and family, embracing the Sunnah of breaking fast together.
  3. Simplify your daily menus, expressing gratitude and practicing moderation.

Checklist for a Smooth Ramadan:

  1. Prepare a list of Duas to enhance your spiritual connection.
  2. Set aside offerings for daily charity, bonus if you can specify recipients.
  3. Create a mindful grocery list, incorporating foods mentioned in the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) diet for a nourishing Suhoor and rewarding Iftar.
  4. Complete Eid il-Fitr shopping in advance.
  5. Renew your home by cleaning and organizing spaces, including clothes, prayer mats, and personal grooming. Embrace self-love and acceptance.

Faith-Based Goals:

  1. Set meaningful intentions for Ramadan, such as enhancing Quranic knowledge and community involvement.
    • Personal Goals: Obtain a translated Quran, as well as learn Arabic, and attend the mosque regularly.
  2. Establish daily goals, like memorizing a new Surah, learning the 99 names of Allah (SWT), or exploring documentaries on the lives of the Prophets.

Approach this sacred month with a loving and open heart, and may your Ramadan be easeful, filled with blessings, self-discovery, and spiritual growth.
